Write-in "Silver Persinger" in slot #5 - How to do a write-in vote?
Read of Interesting developments with the Performing Arts Center (from saverichmond.com) to be located at the site of old Thalheimer's Building between 6th & 7th & Grace & Broad Streets. Exterior demolition began last week. The Art Center is the reason for the 1% meals tax increase, is this right?

Today is Election Day.

Dear Richmond Voter,

Douglas Wilder has recently raised over $350,000. He is the presumed winner. I ask for your vote to send a signal to our government at all levels that people and workers are more important than money.

I believe that the roles of good government are to help organize the community to create a city that is livable for all people (cheap to live in) and to be an efficient manager of tax-payers' money and land resources. "Government" is not an excuse to waste public resources on projects "conceptualized" to generate revenue. Taxpayers' money should improve real conditions for the people of Richmond.

Right now the best thing the City of Richmond could do is to hire more City workers. To do the work that needs to be done. Teachers, police, counselors, parks, and social workers. We will also be ensuring that there are jobs for the people of Richmond that want work. Also, I am interested in setting aside funds to be used as matching funds for groups of individuals that are interested in starting co-operative businesses. Co-ops build stronger communities. The members are stake holders in the businesses and co-ops serve their local communities. Co-operatives are the business of the future.

Despite the fact, that not a single representative of any local news agency came to my media event at City Hall on Columbus Day (Oct. 11, 2004), I still had a good time thanks to my supportive friends.

My Goals / Platform:1) Free Child Care for Low Income Families, 2) Reducing or Abolishing Personal Property Taxes for Low Income Senior Citizens, 3) City sponsored Carpentry Apprentice Program. 4) Referendum on 2, 3, or 4 year length of term for mayor. 5) Free light rail system built using historic buried rail lines. Main Street and Brook Road still have buried rail lines.

Government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
I want to be YOUR Mayor.

There is a news blackout about my campaign in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, The Richmond Free Press, and Style Weekly. Despite the fact that the write-in candidacy is recognized by the electoral board as a legitimate form of voting. We need a truly free press to have a democracy!

"The only thing truth has to fear is concealment."

To be commended: WRVA, a reporter called at noon on the day of the planned announcement conducted a short 5 minute interview and depicted my candidacy in an accurate and mostly unbiased way. City Edition and Editor Nicole Anderson-Ellis, for the opportunity to get 750-850 words into print in their newspaper in the Verbatim column. The Richmond Voice, for conducting a thorough interview. Richmond.com and writer Robb Crocker, for a good article. And thanks to the people at saverichmond.org  for the kind words.

A little history

I ran for City Council in the 6th District in 2002. Visit my 2002 Campaign website. View the literature I created for the City Council campaign of Nov. 5, 2002.

I spent 6 months in 2003 - 2004 attending every council meeting and many commitee meetings. I have attended more recent council meetings than any other candidate aside from current Mayor McCollum. I put out two issues of a newspaper called The Crow Newspaper, which I have lately decided to re-kindle.

I am a citizen of Richmond with an interest in local government reform and Socialism. I have been active on Council issues within the last year, including the Anti-USA Patriot Act Resolution (Res. 2004-R40-61) that Richmond City Council passed; I also participated at the General Assembly this past session to protest City Council's request that the Legislature extend the length of their term to four (4) years, a sly attempt to by-pass the voters. This is the very definition of a tyrant.

If elected mayor, I would make it my job to serve the people and to promote good ideas. I would try to live up to the 5 goals stated above and to stand in firm opposition to "economic development" at the expense of our people and resources.

If you agree with my views, I need your help. I need your vote and I need your help getting my message heard. Tell you friends about my campaign. Write in on Election Day, Tuesday November 2nd. If you are interested in working as a volunteer, or would you like me to address to your citizen group, or if you just have some questions, please give me a call at 683-7845 or email me here.

Wilder's website

Douglas Wilder has raised the most money, $364,957, the majority coming in donations of more than $100. Interesting to note $5000 contributions from Jim Ukrop (of grocery store fame, the 1% meals tax Performing Arts Foundation) and Beverley Armstrong (also of the Performing Arts Foundation, part-owner of the Jefferson Hotel, member of Richmond Renaissance, and a member of several other local boards of directors). This is the sort of "co-operation" between politicians and business men that needs to end.
